RESUMO

Cancer has become a serious problem worldwide, as it represents the main cause of death, and its incidence has increased over the years. A potential strategy to counter the growing spread of various forms of cancer is the adoption of prevention strategies, in particular, the use of healthy lifestyles, such as maintaining a healthy weight, following a healthy diet; being physically active; avoiding smoking, alcohol consumption, and sun exposure; and vitamin D supplementation. These modifiable risk factors are associated with this disease, contributing to its development, progression, and severity. This review evaluates the relationship between potentially modifiable risk factors and overall cancer development, specifically breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer, and highlights updated recommendations on cancer prevention. The results of numerous clinical and epidemiological studies clearly show the influence of lifestyles on the development and prevention of cancer. An incorrect diet, composed mainly of saturated fats and processed products, resulting in increased body weight, combined with physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, and smoking, has induced an increase in the incidence of all three types of cancer under study. Given the importance of adopting correct and healthy lifestyles to prevent cancer, global institutions should develop strategies and environments that encourage individuals to adopt healthy and regular behaviors.

RESUMO

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a blinding condition associated with depression, loneliness and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours which drives AMD progression. We have proposed the first online lifestyle intervention for AMD, called Movement, Interaction and Nutrition for Greater Lifestyles in the Elderly (MINGLE) to promote positive lifestyle changes and reduce loneliness. This qualitative grounded-theory study explored enablers and barriers to future participation in MINGLE for older adults with AMD. Thirty-one participants were interviewed and thematic analysis revealed nine themes. Enablers to participation were: socialising and learning about AMD, motivation to improve health, programme accessibility and structure. Barriers were: lack of time, technology, limited knowledge regarding holistic interventions, vision-related issues, mobility and negative perception of group interactions. These factors must be considered when developing lifestyle interventions for AMD patients to maximise participation. Supporting technology use and raising awareness about benefits of healthy lifestyle behaviours for AMD may help overcome these barriers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low-income Hispanic families face marked disparities in obesity, but interventions for obesity prevention and treatment have rarely been designed with this population as a focus. Hispanic culture is characterized by Familism, a value that prioritizes familial respect, cooperation, and togetherness. We describe the rationale and design of a trial of the Healthy Living Program (HeLP), a bilingual whole-family behavioral obesity prevention and treatment intervention designed around the value Familism and addressing food insecurity. METHODS/DESIGN: This two-group randomized comparative effectiveness trial will compare the effects of HeLP versus a primary care counseling intervention (Recommended Treatment of Obesity in Primary Care, or RTOP) on decreasing body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) in Hispanic children 2-16 years of age with obesity and preventing BMI increase among siblings without obesity. 164 families per arm will be recruited from primary care practices. Families randomized to HeLP will participate in 12 two-hour sessions, followed by booster sessions. HeLP sessions include family meals and instruction in parenting skills, nutrition, culinary skills, fitness, and mindfulness delivered at community recreation centers by bilingual health educators and athletic trainers. Families randomized to RTOP will be offered individual visits in primary care every 3 months throughout the 18-month follow-up period. Secondary outcomes include changes to objectively measured child fitness, the home environment related to nutrition, physical activity, and media usage, food insecurity, child eating behaviors, quality of life, parent BMI and waist circumference, and implementation outcomes. DISCUSSION: This protocol paper describes the rationale and planned methods for the comparative effectiveness trial. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier NCT05041855 (6/13/2023).

RESUMO

Limitations in daily living have not yet been described adequately for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In this study, we investigated first, time spent on protective activities (social, mental, and physical) and second, limitations in practical skills of daily living, both for people with MCI. We used baseline data from 270 individuals who participated in the randomized controlled trial BrainFit-Nutrition. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to identify people with MCI. Participants were asked how much time they spent engaged in social, mental, and physical activities each week. Furthermore, the Bayer-ADL scale was used to quantify deficits in activities of daily living (ADLs). Regarding protection, the number of hours spent engaged in the three activity areas was significantly correlated with the cognitive performance in people with MCI. Social activities were positively associated with current cognitive performance. Concerning the limitations in practical skills of daily living, older and more cognitively impaired individuals were affected. Memory and orientation appear to be among the first practical skills of daily living that become impaired in people with MCI. Treatment recommendations for people with MCI include an increase in social, mental, and physical activities as well as the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a complicated, gradually progressive neurological illness characterized by locomotor and non-motor symptomatology that impedes daily activities. Despite significant advances in symptomatic therapies with various extents of negative effects, there are currently no disease-modifying medicinal alternatives. Symptoms worsen, creating an additional strain that reduces living quality and creates the perception that prescription drugs are no longer productive. OBJECTIVE: Adopting healthy lifestyle habits can help patients feel more empowered, promote wellness, relieve symptoms, and potentially slow neurodegeneration. Nutrition, intellectual stimulation, physical exercise, and stress reduction are all examples of lifestyle habits that improve cognitive health and life satisfaction. We discuss how changes in lifestyle, nutrition, yoga, exercise, and acupuncture can help with managing the disease's symptoms. METHODS: We searched Google Scholar for various research papers and review articles from publishers, such as Bentham Science, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, Springer Nature, and others for gathering the data for the study. RESULTS: Pesticide exposure, environmental hazards, dietary choices, stress, and anxiety all have an indirect or immediate influence on the commencement of Parkinson's disease. Naturopathic remedies, such as nutraceuticals, yoga, exercise, and acupuncture, have been shown to help with Parkinson's disease management. CONCLUSION: Various preclinical and clinical studies have shown that the various factors mentioned are beneficial in the management of the disease, but more research is needed to validate the extent to which such factors are beneficial.

RESUMO

Lifestyle has been linked to the incidence of heart failure, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Using the metabolomic, lifestyle, and heart failure data of the UK Biobank, we identified and validated healthy lifestyle-related metabolites in a matched case-control and cohort study, respectively. We then evaluated the association of healthy lifestyle-related metabolites with heart failure (HF) risk and the added predictivity of these healthy lifestyle-associated metabolites for HF. Of 161 metabolites, 8 were identified to be significantly related to healthy lifestyle. Notably, omega-3 fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) positively associated with a healthy lifestyle score (HLS) and exhibited a negative association with heart failure risk. Conversely, creatinine negatively associated with a HLS, but was positively correlated with the risk of HF. Adding these three metabolites to the classical risk factor prediction model, the prediction accuracy of heart failure incidence can be improved as assessed by the C-statistic (increasing from 0.806 [95% CI, 0.796-0.816] to 0.844 [95% CI, 0.834-0.854], p-value < 0.001). A healthy lifestyle is associated with significant metabolic alterations, among which metabolites related to healthy lifestyle may be critical for the relationship between healthy lifestyle and HF. Healthy lifestyle-related metabolites might enhance HF prediction, but additional validation studies are necessary.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive stimulating activities and a healthy lifestyle are associated with less cognitive impairment. However, whether the association is varied by Apolipoprotein epsilon 4 (APOE ε4) allele carrier status remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate whether the association of cognitively stimulating activities and a healthy lifestyle with the risk of cognitive impairment varied by APOE ε4 allele carrier status. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted for adults aged 60 years and above. Six province administrative units (Beijing, Shanghai, Hubei, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Yunnan) were included using stratified multistage cluster sampling. A total of 1,300 individuals were identified with cognitive impairment (cases) at enrollment and were matched 1:2 on sex, age (±2 years), and residential district with controls who were cognitively normal at the time of the evaluation. We used a standardized questionnaire to collect information on cognitive stimulating activities, lifestyle factors, demographics, and comorbidity. Cognitive stimulating activities included reading books or newspapers, playing cards or mahjong, using the Internet, socializing with neighbors, and community activities. Lifestyle factors included smoking, alcohol drinking, daily tea drinking, and regular exercise. We used logistic regression to assess the interaction between cognitive stimulating activities, lifestyle factors, and APOE ε4 allele carrier status (yes/no) on the risk of cognitive impairment. We tested for additive interaction by estimating relative excess risk (RERI) due to interaction and multiplicative interaction employing the p value of the interaction term of each lifestyle factor and APOE ε4 into the model. RESULTS: Four cognitive stimulating activities were associated with less cognitive impairment regardless of APOE ε4 status. Using the Internet (odds ratio [OR]: 0.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.30-0.95), daily tea drinking (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.63-0.98), and regular exercise (OR: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.65-0.94) were associated with less cognitive impairment only in noncarriers. Multiplicative and additive interactions were found between community activities and APOE ε4 carrier status (multiplicative p value = 0.03; RERI 0.738, 95% CI: 0.201-1.275). CONCLUSION: The associations between cognitive activities and cognitive impairment were robust regardless of the APOE ε4 carrier status, while the associations between lifestyle factors and cognitive impairment varied by APOE ε4 carrier status.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) report reduced quality of life (QoL). Engagement with healthy lifestyle behaviours, including consuming a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and adequate vitamin D exposure, is associated with higher QoL. We aim to assess whether individual lifestyle behaviours are more beneficial to QoL than others, and whether there are additive benefits to QoL by engaging in multiple healthy behaviours concurrently. METHODS: Data from pwMS who completed an online survey at baseline, and at 2.5-, 5- and 7.5-year follow-up, were analysed. Behaviours assessed were consumption of a no-meat/dairy-plus-omega-3 supplementation diet, meditation practice, physical activity, non-smoking, and vitamin D exposure. Mental QoL (mQoL) and physical QoL (pQoL) were assessed by the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life (MSQOL-54) questionaire. Linear regression analyses were performed to assess associations of individual behaviours at baseline and follow-up time points with QoL, as well as between number of behaviours and QoL. RESULTS: At baseline, healthy diet and regular physical activity were associated with higher mQoL (5.3/100 and 4.0/100) and higher pQoL (7.8/100 and 6.7/100). Prospectively, diet was positively associated with mQoL, and physical activity with both mQoL and pQoL. At baseline, engagement with ≥3 behaviours was positively associated with mQoL and pQoL, with additive positive associations for each additional behaviour. Prospectively, engagement with ≥3 behaviours was positively associated with mQoL and pQoL, with strongest associations observed with engagement with five behaviours. CONCLUSION: Consumption of a healthy diet, and regular physical activity, are both potential interventions to improve QoL. Engagement with multiple lifestyle behaviours may provide additional benefits and should be encouraged and supported for multiple sclerosis management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic condition marked by progressive objective cognitive impairment (OCI). No monotherapy has substantially altered disease progression, suggesting the disease is multifactorial and may require a multimodal therapeutic approach. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if cognitive function in a sample with OCI would change in response to a multimodal, individualized care plan based on potential contributors to cognitive decline (e.g., nutritional status, infection, etc.). METHODS: Participants (n = 34) were recruited from the San Diego, CA area. The multimodal intervention included lifestyle changes (i.e., movement, diet, and stress management), nutraceutical support, and medications. It was delivered pragmatically over four clinical visits, and outcome measures were gathered at four study visits, occurring at baseline, one, three, and six months (primary endpoint). Study participants received weekly phone calls for nutrition support throughout study participation. Outcome measures included the Cambridge Brain Sciences (CBS) battery, and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). RESULTS: At 6 months, mean MoCA scores improved from 19.6±3.1 to 21.7±6.2 (p = 0.013). Significant improvement was observed in mean scores of the CBS memory domain [25.2 (SD 23.3) to 35.8 (SD 26.9); p < 0.01] and CBS overall composite cognition score [24.5 (SD 16.1) to 29.7 (SD 20.5); p = 0.02]. All CBS domains improved. CONCLUSION: Multiple measures of cognitive function improved after six months of intervention. Our results support the feasibility and impact of a multimodal, individualized treatment approach to OCI, warranting further research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The intensive data typically collected by mobile health (mHealth) apps allows factors associated with persistent use to be investigated, which is an important objective given users' well-known struggles with sustaining healthy behavior. OBJECTIVE: Data from a commercial meditation app (n=14,879; 899,071 total app uses) were analyzed to assess the validity of commonly given habit formation advice to meditate at the same time every day, preferably in the morning. METHODS: First, the change in probability of meditating in 4 nonoverlapping time windows (morning, midday, evening, and late night) on a given day over the first 180 days after creating a meditation app account was calculated via generalized additive mixed models. Second, users' time of day preferences were calculated as the percentage of all meditation sessions that occurred within each of the 4 time windows. Additionally, the temporal consistency of daily meditation behavior was calculated as the entropy of the timing of app usage sessions. Linear regression was used to examine the effect of time of day preference and temporal consistency on two outcomes: (1) short-term engagement, defined as the number of meditation sessions completed within the sixth and seventh month of a user's account, and (2) long-term use, defined as the days until a user's last observed meditation session. RESULTS: Large reductions in the probability of meditation at any time of day were seen over the first 180 days after creating an account, but this effect was smallest for morning meditation sessions (63.4% reduction vs reductions ranging from 67.8% to 74.5% for other times). A greater proportion of meditation in the morning was also significantly associated with better short-term engagement (regression coefficient B=2.76, P<.001) and long-term use (B=50.6, P<.001). The opposite was true for late-night meditation sessions (short-term: B=-2.06, P<.001; long-term: B=-51.7, P=.001). Significant relationships were not found for midday sessions (any outcome) or for evening sessions when examining long-term use. Additionally, temporal consistency in the performance of morning meditation sessions was associated with better short-term engagement (B=-1.64, P<.001) but worse long-term use (B=55.8, P<.001). Similar-sized temporal consistency effects were found for all other time windows. CONCLUSIONS: Meditating in the morning was associated with higher rates of maintaining a meditation practice with the app. This is consistent with findings from other studies that have hypothesized that the strength of existing morning routines and circadian rhythms may make the morning an ideal time to build new habits. In the long term, less temporal consistency in meditation sessions was associated with more persistent app use, suggesting there are benefits from maintaining flexibility in behavior performance. These findings improve our understanding of how to promote enduring healthy lifestyles and can inform the design of mHealth strategies for maintaining behavior changes.

RESUMO

Background: Wellbeing may have a protective role in health maintenance. However, no specific study clarified the particular protective effect of the subjective wellbeing of rural elderly people on survival probability. Few studies have examined the effect of the lifestyle of rural elderly people on their subjective wellbeing from different perspectives. We investigated whether improving subjective wellbeing increased the probability of longevity of rural elderly people and the effects of lifestyle behaviors on the subjective wellbeing of rural elderly people in different birth generations. Materials and methods: Data were derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), which is an ongoing open cohort study that adopts a multistage, random clustered sampling process. We used the data of elderly people who were aged 65 or over during 2006-2015 for analysis. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test found that the survival probability of rural elderly people was significantly lower than urban elderly people. Based on a sample of rural elderly people, Cox regression and generalized estimating equations were performed as further analyses. Results: A total of 892 rural elderly people aged 65 or over were included in the sample in 2006. High subjective wellbeing was a protective factor against death. The subjective wellbeing of rural elderly people born in the 1940s/1930s/1908-1920s birth generations first decreased then increased. For rural elderly people born in the 1940s, there were significant positive effects of a preference for eating vegetables and walking/Tai Chi on subjective wellbeing. For rural elderly people born in the 1930s, preferences for eating vegetables, reading, and watching TV all had significant positive effects on subjective wellbeing. Rural elderly people born in the 1908-1920s who preferred watching TV had more subjective wellbeing. Conclusion: Improving subjective wellbeing extended the life span and reduced mortality risk in rural elderly people and may be achieved by the shaping of a healthy lifestyle, such as preferences for eating vegetables, walking/Tai Chi, and reading.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with concurrent atrial fibrillation (AF) and diabetes mellitus (DM) [AF-DM] have a high risk of cardiovascular and diabetes-related complications, but are less engaged in a comprehensive treatment approach. We evaluated the association of early rhythm control (ERC), lifestyle modification (LSM), and a combination of ERC and LSM with cardiovascular or diabetes-related complication risk in patients with AF-DM (type 2). METHODS: From the National Health Information Database, 47,940 patients diagnosed with AF-DM in 2009-2016 were included. We defined ERC as rhythm control therapy within two years of AF diagnosis and LSM as adherence to ≥ 2 of the healthy behaviors among non-current smoking, non-drinking, and regular exercise. We compared the primary (ischemic stroke) and secondary (macro- and microvascular complications, glycemic emergency, and all-cause death) outcomes in four groups: non-ERC and non-LSM (group 1), LSM only (group 2), ERC only (group 3), and both ERC and LSM (group 4). RESULTS: Of total, 10,617 (22%), 26,730 (55.8%), 2,903 (6.1%), and 7,690 (16.0%) were classified into groups 1 to 4, in sequence. The mean duration from AF diagnosis to ERC was 25.6 ± 75.5 days. During 4.0 (interquartile range: 2.5-6.2) years' follow-up, groups 2 and 3 were associated with 23% and 33% lower risks of stroke than group 1, respectively. Group 4 was associated with the lowest risk of stroke: hazard ratio (HR) 0.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.51-0.67, p < 0.001. Regarding secondary outcomes, the lowest risks were also observed in group 4; macro- and microvascular complications, glycemic emergency, and all-cause death had HRs (95% CIs) of 0.63 (0.56-0.70), 0.88 (0.82-0.94), 0.72 (0.62-0.84), and 0.80 (0.73-0.87), respectively, all p < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: For AF-DM patients, ERC and LSM exert a synergistic effect in preventing cardiovascular and diabetes-related complications with the greatest lowered risk of stroke. A comprehensive treatment approach should be pursued in AF-DM patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of depression is partly attributable to the poor response of patients to first-line antidepressants. Multimodal programs that promote a healthy lifestyle are successful in treating depression when used as a complementary therapy, but their medium- and long-term benefits have not been demonstrated for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The main aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a lifestyle modification program (LMP) with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and a placebo-control (written suggestions for lifestyle changes) in Spanish patients with TRD. METHODS: This controlled clinical trial randomized 94 patients with TRD into 3 arms. The primary outcome was the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) score at baseline, 2, 6 and 12 months. The secondary outcomes were changes in scores that evaluated quality-of-life, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, physical activity, and social support. RESULTS: Relative to the placebo group, the LMP and MBCT groups had significantly better quality of life (p = 0.017; p = 0.027), and the LMP group had significantly better adherence to the Mediterranean diet (p<0.001) and reduced use of antidepressants (p = 0.036). However, the three groups showed no significant differences in BDI-II score. LIMITATIONS: Only about half of the planned 180 patients were recruited, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: There was no evidence that the LMP treatment significantly reduced symptoms of depression relative to the other groups during the COVID-19 lockdown.

RESUMO

The relationship between intake of dietary supplements and biomarkers such as insulin and insulin-like growth factor has not been well explored. The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the associations between supplement intake and biological and lifestyle factors. We hypothesized that dietary supplement intake was associated with healthier lifestyle behaviors. College students attending a Southeast university were recruited between January 2018 and April 2019. Blood samples were collected to measure insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Statistical tests employed were linear regression and analysis of variance. Ninety-eight participants completed the study and 91% reported taking at least one supplement, while 5.1% reported taking 9+ supplements once per week. There were no differences in levels of insulin, IGF-1 and ALT by levels of dietary supplement intake. Although there were no differences in HEI-2015 score among the groups, those who consumed five or more supplements met a higher percentage of the recommended intake for fruits, performed aerobic exercise for longer duration, and had lower body fat percentage compared to participants who consumed two or less supplements at least once per week. These findings are consistent with previous studies and suggest that dietary supplement intake is highly prevalent in college students, and it may be related to healthy lifestyle behaviors. Future studies should employ mixed methodology to examine reasons by which college students consume dietary supplements and to assess perceived and direct health benefits associated with consumption.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A healthy lifestyle is recommended for prevention, during therapy and in the survivorship of various medical conditions. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to give an overview of the current dietary recommendations and currently discussed topics which are useful for patient counseling. METHODS: The literature with a focus on uro-oncology, on prevention, during cancer therapy and survivorship was reviewed for healthy lifestyle recommendations. In addition, issues perceived in practice were researched, discussed with examples, and critically evaluated. RESULTS: The current recommendations of the professional associations are intended to encourage all healthy or already ill patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, physical activity and healthy body weight. Consistent with current evidence, neither general supplementation of dietary supplements nor avoidance of entire food groups (such as meat or dairy products) is recommended. CONCLUSIONS: In the counseling situation, patients should be encouraged in a healthy lifestyle or supported in an appropriate change of behavior. Any perceived uncertainty or questions from patient's perspective should be clarified and, if necessary, referred to a dietician, oecotrophologist or nutritionist.

RESUMO

Often school-age children are thought of as dependent on their parents and not necessarily involved in behaviors related to their own self-care. It is important to implement and advance self-care performance early in life to promote healthy lifestyles. This review examined the use of Orem's Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory in relation to children's self-care behaviors. This integrative review followed the Whittemore and Knafl guidelines. A systematic search was conducted using the nursing databases. The sixteen study articles were identified for the review, and five themes were identified. Children can develop skills and actively participate in maintaining health and wellbeing. Self-care programs based on Orem's theory are well suited to assist individuals including children to improve self-care skills that lead better self-care practices. Nurses guided by Orem's SCDNT will be well equipped to promote children's knowledge and self-care skills for maintaining health and preventing negative health outcomes.

RESUMO

The positive effects of a healthy lifestyle on the holistic physical condition and quality of life of cancer survivors is scientifically proven. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines for Survivorship specifically highlight the need for support in these areas. The lack of specialised offers for cancer patients in predominantly rural areas, however, represents a high level of assistance needed in terms of the development and implementation of a healthy lifestyle. Following a needs assessment, our aim was to conceptualise and design an easily accessible multi-media patient information system on the basis of a social-cognitive process model on health behaviour (Health Action Process Approach - HAPA). A higher level of health literacy represents, inter alia, the basis for informed choice and, as such, forms an important resource for the aftercare of cancer patients. Further studies are recommended on the acceptance, use and effects of patient information with regard to intended longer-term changes of health behaviour.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Obesity and its sequelae are an increasing problem, disproportionally affecting Maori and Pacific peoples, secondary to multifactorial systemic causes, including the effects of colonisation and the impact of globalisation. There is limited synthesised evidence on interventions to address obesity in these populations. The objective of this review is to identify evaluated interventions for prevention and management of obesity amongst Maori and Pacific adults, assess the effectiveness of these interventions, and identify enablers and barriers to their uptake. DESIGN: Systematic review of databases (Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, CENTRAL), key non-indexed journals, and reference lists of included articles were searched from inception to June 2021. Eligibility criteria defined using a Population, Intervention, Control, Outcome format and study/publication characteristics. Quantitative and qualitative data were extracted and analysed using narrative syntheses. Study quality was assessed using modified GRADE approach. RESULTS: From the 8190 articles identified, 21 were included, with 18 eligible for quantitative and five for qualitative analysis. The studies were heterogenous, with most graded as low quality. Some studies reported small but statistically significant improvements in weight and body mass index. Key enablers identified were social connection, making achievable sustainable lifestyle changes, culturally-centred interventions and incentives including money and enjoyment. Barriers to intervention uptake included difficulty in maintaining adherence to a programme due to intrinsic programme factors such as lack of social support and malfunctioning or lost equipment. CONCLUSIONS: Normal weight trajectory is progressive increase over time. Modest weight loss or no weight gain after several years may have a positive outcome in lowering progression to diabetes, or improvement of glycaemic control in people with diabetes. We recommend urgent implementation of Maori and Pacific-led, culturally-tailored weight loss programmes that promote holistic, small and sustainable lifestyle changes delivered in socially appropriate contexts.

RESUMO

Mindfulness has been defined as attention and awareness to the present with an attitude of openness, non-judgment, and acceptance. It is suggested that mindfulness can positively influence experiences in sports and physical activity, increasing adherence to these activities. This study aimed to examine new psychometric properties of the State Mindfulness Scale for Physical Activity (SMS-PA) using classical and modern testing theories among Brazilian sport and exercise practitioners. Two studies were conducted. In the first, with 617 Brazilian sports practitioners, confirmatory factor analysis supported the bifactor structure of the SMS-PA composed of two specific (mental and body mindfulness) and one general factor (state mindfulness), which did not vary among genders. The Rasch Rating Scale Model (RSM) supported essential one-dimensionality indicated by the general factor with good item fit statistics (infit/outfit 0.62-1.27). The model presented a good level of Rasch reliability (0.85), and the items difficulty estimation provided an understanding of the continuum represented by their content. In the second study, with 249 Brazilian exercise practitioners, the structural equation modeling showed that Body Mindfulness was associated with positive outcomes (positive affect and satisfaction with practice). The mediation analysis showed that people with higher levels of Body mindfulness tend to experience greater levels of Positive Affect and, consequently, greater Satisfaction with exercises. The results suggest that the Brazilian version of the SMS-PA is an appropriate measure of the state of mindfulness.(AU)

With the advent of COVID-19, a state of public health was declared, and measures of isolation and social distance to contain the spread of the disease was decreed. The Federal Council of Psychology, considering the importance of safe reception during the pandemic, published CFP Resolution No. 4/2020, allowing psychological services to happen remotely. This study narrates, via the Cartography Method, the experience of inventing an Online Setting for group reception. Therapeutic groups were offered, via Google Meet Platform, to students at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. A logbook was produced to accompany the forces that crossed and constituted the territory and the remote group experience. We understand that the territoryspace-group-online was composed by the virtual-space that we gathered, by the individualspaces of each member and by the forces that crossed them. We observed that the participants did not always have a private place, but they were present at the meeting with open and/or closed cameras and audio and/or through the video call chat. Participation in the group worked as an alternative at the time of social distancing, being a possibility for psychological care in situations of difficulty in face-to-face meetings, however, it proved to be difficult at various times, due to the lack of adequate equipment and instability on the internet, factors that interfered in meetings and impacted the possibility of speaking and listening to what was desired.(AU)
